Bella Coola Heli Skiing Package, British Columbia
Coast Mountains Helicopter Skiing
After years of searching we discovered Bella Coola, and found it to be ideal in terms of geographic features, climate, and diversity of sport and eco tourism activities. The Bella Coola Valley is located approximately 400 kilometres north of Vancouver, in the Coast Range of British Columbia. This is the most rugged and inaccessible of all regions in British Columbia. This base is 150 kilometres (90 miles) from the open ocean. Immediately to the east is the high Chilcotin Plateau. As storms roll in off the Pacific they dump their moisture load on the Coast Mountains, creating some of the deepest snowpacks in the world, then progressively dry out as they move east. This has created the ideal location for heli-sports, with lots of snow to the west and a sunnier and drier climate pushing in from the east. The ski terrain is almost 600,000 hectares (6,000 km2) of pristine, untouched wilderness. It is one of the largest heli-skiing tenures in the world and offers a very exclusive heli-skiing experience. Our strength is high alpine terrain and majestic scenery. Jagged rock towers, giant glacier bowls, steep couloirs, and enormous peaks dominate the landscape. The views are second to none, with some of our runs starting against a backdrop of the dark water fjords below. This is "Alaska Style" big mountain riding, but with the singular advantage that we have tree skiing options. During bad weather days we will be in the trees ripping up the fresh snow. The terrain ranges all the way from golf course fairways to the scary steeps, and many of our runs are 1,500 to 1,800 vertical metres (5,000 to 6,000 vertical feet). The longest is 2,150 vertical metres (almost 7,000 vertical feet). This is the longest ski run in North America serviced by either helicopter or lift. Our snow pack is also the most stable, with generally low, recorded avalanche hazards. This is direct result of our consistent and temperate climate, combined with reliable and plentiful snowfall. Therefore, when our guides decide its safe, we can ski and ride steeper, more aggressive terrain than is usually the case at heli-skiing operations. We are also one of the few heli-skiing operations able to offer couloir skiing. Your lift service will be a five passenger jet powered A-star helicopter. This is the most flexible and reliable machine available, allowing your group to land and pick-up where bigger machines can't go.
Located on 50 acres of private land within Tweedsmuir Provincial Park, the historic lodge provides an unparalleled wilderness setting with a relaxing, private ambience. Old growth forests and wildlife abound, and every time you look up, there are stunning views of mountains and glaciers, towering 2,450 metres (8,000 vertical feet) above the valley floor. Your accommodation is in newly constructed cabins. Each cabin has a private bathroom and shower, a main bedroom, loft and a fireplace. Amenities include a huge dining room / living room with fireplace; sports bar with pool table and games; satellite TV; a large outdoor hot tub; a guest media room with satellite linked computer; fax and phone service; and a fitness room. Massage therapy is also available. Enjoy delicious and hearty meals, hors d’ouevres, après ski snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. Meals are based on local products, prepared according to the highest standards. Our bar and wine cellar are loaded with good quality and popular brands of spirits, beers and wines.
Tour Itinerary
Your Heli Ski holiday begins in Vancouver, Canada, where you will catch the flight at 9:00 am. Enjoy the one hour and fifteen minute flight north past the highest and most majestic peaks in British Columbia. We meet you at the Bella Coola Airport and drive 40 minutes to our lodge for a special welcome reception. Lodge check-in is followed by a sumptuous lunch, including introductions to all staff, and information regarding the week's coming activities. Following this, your guides will share with you the up-to-date weather forecast and advise on snow conditions. This session will also include signing your waiver of liability, safety orientation, and avalanche transceiver training.

The following day will start with an early breakfast. After this you will be introduced to our helicopter pilot and he will conduct a helicopter safety talk. With everybody up to speed on the specific operational mechanics of heli-skiing, it is now time to have fun, from as early in the morning to as long as daylight lets us go. Lunch will be served out in the mountains. This includes hot soups, sandwiches, baked goods, as well as hot and cold drinks.

After a big day in the mountains you will be dropped off at your front door. The après ski hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be served, and the hot tub and massage therapist will be available. After some relaxation it will be time for dinner, your daily vertical count, and the next day's weather and snow report. This is the program for the six days you are in Bella Coola. There is also an option to ski and snowboard for a half-day on the seventh day, your departure date. On your day of departure we plan to have you back in Vancouver at 2:00 pm, but weather can easily cause delays. We recommend therefore scheduling any International Flights for the following day.
